The two elements line and color, isolated and simplified, in clear outline and independent of each other – albeit overlapping and intersecting.
Why do we perceive simplicity in art as beautiful? Maybe it is because art can help us extract what is essential and speaks to our senses while leaving out what we do not really need for enjoyment?
The other day I looked at landscapes by Henri Martin (1860-1943) and Paula Modersohn-Becker (1876-1907) – painted around the same time. I find the German painter’s work so much simpler – yet so much more enjoyable.
